Lodgepole Pine, Engelmann Spruce, and Western Red Cedar.*

*Please note that if you want your home to be cedar, it will be necessary to purchase it at least six to eight months in advance. Cedar is highly prized for its beauty and is known for being more impervious to rot and insects. However, it takes a substantial amount of time to obtain cedar and air-dry it to our standards.

Pine

Lodgepole Pine

Pinus contorta, with the common name lodgepole pine, is a common tree in western North America. It is common near the ocean shore and in dry montane forests to the subalpine. Like all pines, it is an evergreen conifer. Heartwood is light reddish/yellowish brown, sapwood is yellowish white. Heartwood color tends to be paler than Ponderosa Pine, and isn’t always clearly demarcated from the sapwood.

Spruce

Engelmann Spruce

Picea engelmannii, with common name Engelmann spruce, is a species of spruce native to western North America, including British Columbia and Alberta, California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Engelmann Spruce is usually a cream to almost white color, with an occasional hint of red.

Cedar

Western Redcedar

Thuja plicata, commonly called western or Pacific redcedar (one written as one word), is an evergreen coniferous tree in the cypress family native to western North America.  Heartwood is reddish to pinkish brown, often with random streaks and bands of darker red/brown areas. Narrow sapwood is pale yellowish white and isn’t always sharply demarcated from the heartwood.
